Leo Led GRI to Top, Sent SAM to Bottom

2011.05.16 12:15

Leo Chow scored 12 of this a game-high 14 points in the final period to put GRIZZ atop the FLIGHT Division, and the loss ended SAMURAI‘s season in just the middle of May.

Like other SAMRUAI game, the pace was slow and both teams struggle to scores in the first period. Dickson Chau (#7) scored the team’s all three points in that span but GRIZZ led 4-3 entering the second.

After Dickson answered Terry Suen’s (GRI #12) basket, Mark Au (SAM #34) caught a pass from Patrick Lai (SAM #15) near the baset as he scored under the rim for a 7-6 lead.

And that was all SAMURAI could have for the rest of the season.

The game continued to be slow. Jefferson Tong (#8), another addition this season to SAMURAI, split a pair of free that brought his team back to 8-10 but Tony Chow (GRI #11) scored two points which concluded the first half with a five-point lead for GRIZZ.

Roger Mamud (GRI #32) was hurt and left the court in the middle of third period, and he did not return. But SAMURAI, without good enough defense, cannot capitalize to take advantage still.

An off balance three-point shot by Terence Leung (GRI #23) hit the glass and went in as the first basket in the second half, which extended the lead to seven-points.

Ka Ming Wan (SAM #5) and Jackie Lai (SAM #11) each scored in the third period and cut the deficit to only 3 twice and was down 16-19 entering the final ten minutes of their season.

Shot from the field only 1-for-4 through three periods, Leo hit his first three-pointer of the game that re-gain a 6-point lead and that is not the end. After a free throw, Leo hit another long jumper and SAMURAI needed a time-out after a free throw by Ryan Murphy (GRI #50) which turned the lead to nine.

Holman Kwan (SAM #3) made his first basket of the game with a minute more to go but the 7-point hole was too big that even Ryan throw the ball out-out bound would not help SAMURAI to stay.

Eric Leung (#20), the team’s leading three-point shooter, did not attend the game. Jackie and Patrick combined to miss all four three-point attempts from the field in the final minutes, when Dickson made his first long basket since 2010 March.

Both the two new SAMURAI this season, Dickson and Jefferson, missed last year’s play-offs, they played for Chung Sing and SPIRIT (formerly known as M.I.B.) respectively. As Dickson is also an M.I.B. in Original Four series, this game had six former M.I.B. on the floor including Leo Chow, Tony Chow, Chan Ho Yin and Gary Chow, who played his season début after missing all but Sunday of the season.

Chi Chiu Au (SAM #28) played for the first time since a pre-season injury and added four points off the bench.

SAMURAI averaged 31.2 points in six games this season, only second to G.T. Explorers for the worst ranking.

With winning a tie-breaker against Dream Team, GRIZZ secured a top-rank after the win despite Dream Team also won later in the evening.
